Immortaliser Athènes : Une odyssée à travers une ville idéalisée
Les récits mythologiques, qui nous fascinent depuis toujours, nous ont permis d'expliquer le monde qui nous entoure, de transmettre des valeurs morales et de sonder les profondeurs de la psychologie humaine.
En préparant mon voyage à Athènes ce sont des images de ces légendes ayant traversé les âges que je pensais ramener.
Mais, au fil de mes déambulations, ce sont les traces de notre civilisation contemporaine, bien loin des dieux et des créatures fantastiques, qui se sont imposées à moi.
Dans la chaleur étouffante d’un été Athénien, j’embarquais dans une expédition photographique commandée par une maison d’édition. J'étais chargé de réaliser des clichés d’ouvrages d’architecture ayant fait usages du marbre à travers les âges, de l’Acropole à la fondation Onassis en passant par divers immeubles récents.
En tant qu'amateur de récits mythologiques, j'étais extatique à l'idée de profiter de cette commande pour découvrir Athènes. J'avais hâte d'explorer cette ville et de pouvoir ramener des images des légendes locales.
Ce que je n’avais pas envisagé et que j’allais découvrir, c’était le véritable visage qu’offrait Athènes. Visage qui différait grandement de l’image que je m’en était fait.
Moi qui étais préparé à immortaliser les charmes antiques de la ville, je capturais véritablement les signes d'une toute autre histoire, plus contemporaine...
Pendant trois jours, je parcourais la ville à pied. Lors de mes déambulations, ce ne sont pas les mythes et légendes que je rencontrais mais les signes du tourisme de masse moderne.
Des flots de bus qui déchargeaient des centaines de touristes, des poubelles pleines qui rendaient leurs détritus sur le bitume, des restaurants et des magasins toutes portes ouvertes qui crachaient leur air conditionnée…
Dans l’ombre des ruines antiques, se dévoilait notre récit contemporain que je capturais en images vibrantes.
Immortalizing Athens: An Odyssey Through an Idealized City
Mythological tales, which have always fascinated us, have allowed us to explain the world around us, transmit moral values and explore the depths of human psychology.
As I prepared for my trip to Athens, it was images of these legends that had transcended the ages that I thought I would bring back.
However, as I wandered through the city, it was the traces of our contemporary civilization, far removed from gods and fantastical creatures, that struck me.
In the stifling heat of an Athenian summer, I embarked on a photographic expedition commissioned by a publishing house. I was tasked with taking pictures of architectural works that have used marble throughout the ages, from the Acropolis to the Onassis Foundation to various recent buildings.
As a lover of mythological stories, I was ecstatic at the idea of taking advantage of this assignment to discover Athens. I was eager to explore this city and be able to bring back images of local legends.
What I had not considered and what I was going to discover was the real face of Athens. A face that differed greatly from the image I had made of it.
I, who was prepared to immortalize the city's ancient charms, was actually capturing the signs of a whole other story, a more contemporary one...
For three days, I walked the city on foot. During my wanderings, it was not myths and legends that I encountered but the signs of modern mass tourism.
Floods of buses unloading hundreds of tourists, overflowing bins spilling their rubbish onto the asphalt, restaurants and shops with all their doors open spewing out their air conditioning...
In the shadow of the ancient ruins, our contemporary story unfolded, which I captured in vibrant images.
